Final Major Project 3.3: Ideas

"A logo does not need to tell the consumer what the company is about... for this to work the logo needed to have that information within it."

Once the info-graphics were complete I went back o edit the logo based on the criticism. I came to the conclusion that, dispute the fact that logos do not need to tell consumers what the company is about, for this to work the logo needed to have that information within it. I decided to add some text to the logo that told consumers what we did "Print. Design & New Media". However i then had to decide what font to use for this text and went through several basic fonts including but not limited to; Garamond, Veranda, Times, and Helvetica I eventually settled on Myriad Pro as it had perfectly conveyed what the company was about in terms of style.

"It is important to test the effect of colour in a logo and consider it effects on consumers"

Once the words and typeface had been decided I used Adobe Illustrator to make final adjustments to the logo. One the positioning of the text had been finalised I decided to settle on an underline beneath the worked 'ENVY' as it gave the logo something to work with. I made the finalised logo and experimented with the overlaid coloured versions of the text (below). Because we are aware the logo works in black and white it is important to test the colour and the effect of the colour on the consumers.

Final Major Project 3.2: Ideas

"We live in a visual age facts and figures on a a page are useless to consumers... putting information its something visually stimulating is a more effective means of communicating a message."

Once I had the logo down I decided to see what my tutor as well as other students thought of it. I created a questionnaire based on an image of the logo at the top of the page. I handed out of total of 20 and received 16 back. After looking at the views, opinions and cross referencing the responses I deduced the best way to display this information would be in info graphics. Because we live in a visual age, numbers and facts on a page are useless to consumers and they would dismiss it. By putting in into a piece of graphics the information is broken down into what is necessary, applying aesthetics of design will allow me to create something visually stimulating as well as being useful. Using information from an info graphics website called informationisbeautiful.com I put the data from the questionnaire into graphics.

Final Major Project 3.1: Ideas

"A logo should work just as well at 10mm would at 10m"

I found the font I was after on a website called unstage.com, a design inspiration site. The font is called LT_04. After loading in into Adobe Illustrator and typing out the company name I used some of the tools to make in=t into an eatable vector. This would ensure that the logo was mathematically precise and would work as well as 10 millimetres as it would at 10 meters. Using the editable object tool I was able to make each letter an editable vector and do whatever I likes with them.

After various attempts and experimentation with different forms, sizes and juxtaposition I finally settled on a logo.

Final Major Project 3: Ideas

I have begin sketching several ideas for logos over a few pages in my sketchbook. I found it difficult to begin with but when I referred to advice given in an old issue of Computer Arts magazine I found them a great help. When brainstorming I decided to keep it fluid and sketched the ideas as the came and avoided second guessing before sketching them out. Each sketch was not edited instead revisions were made next to it until a new idea came along.

If the logo did not work in black and white it would not work at all.

I worked in black and white when sketching because colour should only be used to elevate the logo not make it. If the logo did not work in black and white it would not work at all. As I developed it I found that it became more of a typographic logo than an image, but as I felt it worked I began to develop it further.

Above is the final idea for the logo. Before hand drawing it I came across a website that had a familiar font style to the typographical logo I had just drawn. I though I would search for the font or if push came to she I would make a costume logo from an exiting font using computer programmes. By using a typographic logo it could work across all media as well as not beluga to any given time or place granting it longevity.

Final major Project 2: Research

Now begins the research part of the project. I have used journals such as Computer Arts and Advanced Photoshop as well as books such as The Fundamentals of Creative Design by Gavin Ambrose & Paul Harris, Design Evolution: Theory Into Practice, Motion Blur: OneDotZero- Graphic Moving Image Makers. The image is above was taken of the research work from the print Sketchbook; Logo design, design and advice in general.

Final MaJor Project 1

A 'New Identity' and complete rebrand of envy across all media has been commissioned. Print, Web, Motion and Mobile. These are the sketchbooks within which the ideas for the project and development will be documented. I have one for each part of the cross media campaign. Print (left), Motion (top right) and Web (bottom right). The print work will include business cards, letter heads, envelopes, invoices, leaflets, posters and folders. The motion graphics work will include an online advertisement, web banner and screensaver. The Web work will no doubt include an official website, mobile website as well as the very blog you are visiting now.
